Exploring Color & Its Impact on Infants

When choosing colors for your baby’s nursery and bedding, it is always good to pick something you like, but what may be even more important is to understand the physiology and psychology behind color that may have an impact on your kids.

Did you know that there are about seven million different colors that can be perceived by the human eye? At birth, newborns can only see black, white, and gray. In the weeks following, they begin to recognize red, followed by blue, and so on. This recognition of color helps them develop their perception skills, and they begin to reach out for the color.

Soft, pastel colors are considered to be soothing and are often recommended for nurseries so that your baby’s sensory skills do not cause him or her to become confused or overwhelmed. However, brighter, more vibrant colors may work best in playrooms in order to stimulate your baby.

As you start making plans to prepare your nursery or update an existing kid or family space, take a closer look at the impact of color:

Yellow: This is a color of contradictions. On one hand, it’s warm, sunny, and cheerful. Yellow gets your attention, brightens up any space, and is known for stimulating muscle activity and creativity. Yet, studies have shown that babies will become agitated or cry more often in yellow rooms. Some think it’s because yellow is the last color babies can see, and it can be overpowering if overused or too bright.

Green: An uplifting color that reinforces self-esteem and encourages hope. Green is the easiest color on the eyes and can actually improve vision. It symbolizes nature, youth, and balance, making green a great color for kids whose nurseries stay their rooms through their teen years. You never have to repaint!

Pink: Love, romance, and femininity are traits of this pretty, little-girl loving color. It’s great for every little princess in your life. It’s also calming and can help pacify little ones who may often get worked up or have tantrums.

Blue: Inhale. Now exhale. That’s blue. It creates a sense of calm (actually causing the body to release chemicals causing a serene feeling) and symbolizes peace, caring, wisdom, and devotion. Known as the most positive color universally across different cultures, blue is also very cooling, which is good for a baby who often gets hot or for nurseries in warmer climates.

Purple: Because purple is rarely seen in nature, it’s often referred to as the most “unnatural” or artificial color. Avoid deeper shades that stand for royalty and power and choose lighter tones for your nursery. They create a peaceful, nostalgic feeling while still having a luxurious feel.

White: Don’t underestimate white for a baby’s room. It’s pure and clean and evokes peace and joy. White has a great energy about it and provides a fabulous backdrop for bright and graphic room accessories. It also can make small spaces seem larger; great for tight living quarters. The downside: it can be difficult to keep clean.

Tan/Gray: These earth tones relay warmth, comfort, and relaxation and may be just the right touch for a very emotional baby or passionate child. It also evokes feelings of strength, security, and reliability, and is a perfect choice for someone looking for something natural, down-to-earth, and sophisticated.
